Pelican Pub & Brewery Claims Grand Champion Trophy in the Australian International Beer Awards.
At the 2004 Australian International Beer Awards, the Pelican Pub & Brewery's India Pelican Ale was the highest scoring beer of all 850 entries.
PACIFIC CITY, OR – May 6, 2004 – At the Australian International Beer Awards the Pelican Pub & Brewery was honored with the Grand Champion Trophy, awarded to the highest scoring beer of all entries. The award was received for their champion India Pelican Ale, the top dog of a record breaking 850 entries. Headbrewer Darron Welch personally accepted the award on Thursday night at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne, Australia. American breweries won a number of medals at the awards. The Pelican Pub & Brewery also won a bronze for its Doryman's Dark Ale.
The Australian International Beer Awards is the third largest annual professional beer competition in the world. Held in Melbourne each year, the AIBA, Australia's most prestigious beer event. Now firmly established on the international brewing calendar as a renowned and recognized barometer of diversity in beer brewing across the world. The awards are run by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RAS) in conjunction with the University of Ballarat, which offers the only accredited brewing courses in the Southern Hemisphere. The RAS and the University of Ballarat established the Australian International Beer Awards in 1993.
The Awards have again attracted a truly international field with beers from 23 countries. Brews from around Australia, Austria, France, USA, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, India, New Zealand, Cambodia, Thailand, Vanuatu, Tonga and the Philippines. Entries were judged in 40 classes between the 16 and 20 of April at the University of Ballarat, Ballarat and the 22 and 23 of April at the Melbourne Showgrounds, Ascot Vale.
