Pelican Pub & Brewery awarded Gold medal at 18th Annual Great American Beer Festival.
The Pelican's Doryman's Dark Ale wins a coveted Gold medal in a category of more than three dozen American Style Brown Ales.
PACIFIC CITY, OR— October 15, 1999—The Great American Beer Festival, the country's oldest and largest celebration of American brewing, has awarded the Pelican Pub & Brewery a Gold medal for brewing excellence in the American Style Brown Ale category for Doryman's Dark Ale.
During the three-day festival at Denver, Colorado's Currigan Exhibition Hall, October 7-9, a professional blind tasting panel of 94 internationally renowned judges evaluated nearly 2000 beers submitted by 491 breweries. The panel awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in 54 different style categories.
"Winning a Gold for Doryman's Dark has been quite a journey," explains Pelican Head Brewer, Darron Welch. "The beer began six years ago as a home brew that took Best of Show at the Lane County Fair in Oregon. That success inspired me to become a professional brewer. After refinements, the Pelican Pub & Brewery introduced the beer as Doryman's Dark, which won a Silver medal at the 1998 Great American Beer Festival. And now we've won the Gold. This is a huge success for the Pelican, myself, my assistant brewer David Mecklem and Pacific City."
Doryman's Dark Ale is distinguished by its deep brown hue and balanced aroma of roasted malts and Northwest-grown hops. The dark ale's crystal malt sweetness is countered with the assertive flavors of Cascade and Mt. Hood hops.
Other award-winning Pelican brews include the Tsunami Stout (Bronze, Foreign Style Stout, 1998 Great American Beer Festival), MacPelican's Scottish Style Ale (four-time winner of People's Choice award, 1996-1999 Florence Chowder, Blues & Brews Festival; silver medal, Scottish Ale, 1999 North American Beer Awards) and Indian Pelican Ale (Gold medal, India pale Ale, 1999 North American Beer Awards).
